One of the more frustrating experiences is trying to clean a computer with a broken Norton - the Norton product may be alive enough to try to interfere with some cleaning tools, but not alive enough to do anything about the malicious software which won't play nice. As a result, newer malicious software will disable or step on portions of Norton and McAfee, resulting in failed uninstallations on top of the malicious software. Tons of folks who've purchased these computers fail to keep the pre-installed AV updated beyond the free period.
For years, Norton/McAfee/etc have been included on boxed computers.
